seashells in an envelope

25th January 2021.

I received a parcel from Anna in the post. She had enclosed a letter and also a collection of shells which she had picked up off the beach on a walk.

They were sewn on to a piece of fabric – there were also drips of candle wax on the cloth. I wondered when Anna had put this collection together. There were still granules of sand hanging on and some bits of the shell were crumbling off, on to my desk.

The thread holding the shells to the cloth reminded me of little pathways. I drew on my own little walkers, navigating the world of the enormous sea-shells.

I can’t wait to walk with friends again, to see the sea and collect shells on the beach – for now, I will make do with the landscape on this piece of cloth.
